Research and Outreach Officer


Partnership for Young London is leading on a range of research projects including those focused on youth-led research, working with groups of young people to train them in research skills, supporting them in undertaking research and the analysis of data and presentation of feedback.


The key aspects of this job will be to undertake:


  • Supporting with the publication of several research projects, including a toolkit for participatory research

  • Face to face and desk-based research across a range of thematic areas.

  • Outreach engagement with youth provision, universities, schools, colleges, and youth provision to engage with research networks.

  • Supporting young people to conduct research, analysing, and feeding back the data that they collect.

  • Ensure that the approach has a targeted focus on the needs of young people from minoritised groups.

Post: Research Officer - Partnership for Young London (PYL)


Accountable to: The Strategic Director and the Research and Campaigns Lead


Location: Guildhall, London EC2V7HH


Hours: 30 hours per week on a flexible basis, Monday to Friday for 12 months – or potentially 36 hours a week depending on the candidate


Salary: 26k pro rata


Contract: March 2023 – March 2024


Principal duties:


To work alongside of the Policy and Research Lead and support on several research programmes, attend training sessions with practitioners and young people, gather and analyse data and support in the development of reports, ensuring that co-production is core to this work.


This will focus on expanding the existing the research and youth engagement networks, supporting youth-led research and campaigns, gathering data and insight about young people and the support they want in the future.


This will be achieved by:

  • Working with the Policy and Research lead to facilitate networks and training sessions with young people and practitioners

  • Developing the youth engagement work for this project with a focus on young people from minoritised communities

  • Undertaking research and content development for the projects

  • Collating examples of practice and supporting in the development of resources and publications

  • Developing the research network for London with other colleagues

  • Developing the social media platforms for young people’s feedback including research and influencing activities and make links with other key groups.


Main tasks:


Partnership Working

  • To liaise with key groups on developing regional best practice on youth-led research and youth engagement

  • To support on the development of the research network for London

Youth Voice and Research

  • To support on the development of youth voice and engagement work via youth-led research

  • To help facilitate training sessions with young people on research and social action.

  • To develop youth led research approaches, designing research, analysing data and presenting data and feedback.

  • To work with other groups of young people to support them to effectively present their data to profile the issues and influence services.

  • To run focus groups and face to face interviews

Communications & Youth Led Research

  • To develop the social media platforms for youth voice and youth-led research i.e. website, Instagram, and twitter

  • To work with other organisations aligned to the ethos of Partnership for Young London’s work on young people’s voice and youth-led research.

Regional Voice and Influence

  • To attend strategic and operational forums and represent Partnership for Young London and showcase the feedback from the work.

Reporting

  • To provide regular reports to the Strategic Director and Trustees on the work programme

This post is a 12-month contract and will be offered subject to satisfactory references, DBS checks and a probationary period of two months.


Person Specification


Experience

  • Experience of undertaking research, analysing data and presenting data (Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative analysis)

  • Experience writing literature reviews and writing up research summaries.

  • Experience of working of volunteering with other groups of young people

  • Experience of social action or campaigning

  • An interest in gaining more experience in using research to campaign.

Knowledge

  • An understanding of the issues facing young people, preferably in London

  • An understanding of safeguarding with young people

Skills

  • Research and data analysis

  • Good communication skills

  • Website and social media skills

  • Able to develop networks and partnerships with other groups.
