Vision for Young Londoners
A Vision for Young Londoners is a vision statement that involves a cross-sector alliance of over 50 organisations, setting out a unified strategy and set of values to help deliver a brighter future for London’s young people.
Supporting organisations include funders, local authorities, youth work practitioners, play providers, formal education providers, arts and sports organisations, the wider voluntary sector, housing providers, and councillors. The Vision was developed with their input, and is part of the dialogue between policy makers and providers across the capital.
Programme of work
The Vision is a commitment to the young people that we work with, and work for, and to the shared values of:
Putting young people at the centre of all we do.
Committing to meaningful and sustained collaboration.
Being positive and aspirational for young Londoners.
To be guided by the imperative of enabling young people.
The Vision for Young Londoners was conceived in 2015 by Partnership for Young London, London Youth, and London Funders. It aims to unite the youth sector under a common agenda to deliver a better future for London’s young people.
In January 2015, we brought together for the first time a diverse range of voices drawn from over 40 organisations to debate and develop a vision statement, as a starting point to getting clarity and a shared approach. From formal and informal education, London local and regional government, funders, providers of arts and sports opportunities, everyone recognised the value in us working together to offer support, challenge and enhance provision.
We deliberately didn’t set out to make it a young people’s vision – it is driven first and foremost by those of us who work with or support those who work with young people, in a huge range of settings, every day. We don’t at all pretend to be completely representative of everyone working with young people – which is why we want organisations to share this document, comment on it and seek feedback.
We are also asking groups to share it with young people, because it is absolutely vital that young people should see something positive for them in this vision No-one pretends it will be easy – but in Vision for Young Londoner’s, we have a good start, and with further input we can have something that people can genuinely sign up to and make a reality. Please do contact any of our organisations if you have comments or questions. We’ll be spending some months consulting and finessing, then bringing people together again after the summer.
For too long the organisations working with young people have felt themselves at the mercy of decisions about funding or investment which don’t always sit with our understanding of the priorities for young people. “We came together to explore what was needed, and found so much common ground, across Local Authorities, policy-makers, formal and informal education, and organisations working in health, housing and social care. We are now calling on others to join us to help make the vision a reality.”
