Smart Data Donation Service

What is the Smart Data Donation Service
The Smart Data Donation Service (SDDS) is part of a nationwide network of projects. These all look at ways in which we can gather and use data generated by people as part of their everyday lives to improve society.
What does the SDDS do?
We design and build both the technology that allows people to donate their data securely, and also the technology that helps researchers use that data properly. This includes digital programmes to transfer data from platforms like Google and TikTok, through to physically having secure rooms where trusted researchers can come and work with the data we collect.
What are The Main Aims of The SDDS?

Finding innovative ways to collect, capture and store the data we generate in our everyday lives.
The SDDS focuses on four main areas of work:
Innovative tools & services
We design and build innovative tools and services to allow us to capture data donations from the public and make it available, securely, for researchers to use in their work for public good.
Collaboration
We enable close collaborative relationships with people who donate their data, researchers who are working with donated data, and organisations who can help influence and positively impact public policy.
Research best practice
We champion best practice for the use of data donation in research, and set the standards for future data donation work.
Public rights
We champion the interests of members of the public looking to understand and access their right to data portability.

Why Should you donate your data?
Your everyday data - from fitness trackers, video game use, social media apps and more - holds the power to transform research and influence society for the better. By donating your data, you’ll join a growing movement of people taking part in citizen science, where members of the public actively shape the research that drives change.
