Children's Rights

Children's Rights Alliance England (CRAE)

CRAE protects the human rights of children by lobbying government and others who hold power, by bringing or supporting test cases and by using regional and international human rights mechanisms. It provides free legal information and advice, raises awareness of children’s human rights, and undertakes research about children’s access to their rights. It mobilises others, including children and young people, to take action to promote and protect children's human rights. Each year it publishes a review of the State of children's rights in England.

Children’s rights and equality in the newspapers, May 2009, is the latest report published by The Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE). It reviews the representation of children’s rights and children’s equality in the national print media. In an audit of ten tabloid and broadsheet newspapers over a six month period, CRAE found that articles about children’s rights and equality made up only 1.8% of all articles about children. Sensationalist stories about children as victims were most likely to dominate news coverage of children.

Another perspective - CRAE, March 2009 is a set of guidelines to help professionals working in the media to improve thier reporting of stories about children and young people.

Young Equals, a project co-ordinated by CRAE, published Making the case, a report challenging the Government position that there is “little evidence” of harmful age discrimination against children and young people, and questioning why the Government is failing to extend legal protection from age discrimination to under-18s.

Get ready for change!

Get ready for change! is a project led by children and young people to check how well our Government protects children’s human rights, and to campaign for change. In 2008, children and young people took their messages on human rights to the United Nations. They are now campaigning for their rights to be better protected.
