Aim:
To enable participants to effectively support young people with homelessness/accommodation issues.
To develop an understanding of the Housing Act, its legislative usefulness and to examine how case laws and recent changes in the Homelessness Act can be used to assist homeless young people.
Target Audience
Advisors, Youth Workers, Key Workers, Youth Support and other practitioners who advise young people and who require a good understanding of legislative solutions to their housing problems. This course is particularly relevant to those who have already developed some understanding of young peoples’ housing issues and wish to develop their ability to assist their clients.
Subjects covered
- New developments to homeless young persons entitlement
- Part VII of the Housing Act 1996 as amended by the Homelessness Act 2002,
- New priority needs
- The Children Act 1989 and the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000
- Relevant Case law
- EU citizens entitlement
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the current regulations relating to provision of accommodation to young people
- Identify the support and benefits young people are entitled to
- Signpost to appropriate support and future guidance
- Inform young people of their accommodation options and support them in making appropriate choices
