Since 1995, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has invested over £4 billion in the heritage sector, with significant funding going to projects which engage young people in heritage. Recognising that protecting our heritage in the long term depends upon involving young people, in 2002 a scheme called ‘Young Roots’ was set up to involve more young people in heritage activities. Since this time, £5 million has been awarded to 243 Young Roots projects across the UK.
In April 2008, HLF launched its third strategic plan. Over the next five years, HLF will continue to fund heritage projects of all sizes, but following consistent customer feedback, the application processes have been simplified. HLF has also introduced new initiatives to support applicants and grantees.
To help you find out more about these changes, HLF is working in partnership with PYL to deliver two free regional workshops, particularly aimed at participation workers and other frontline practitioners on:
- Monday 2nd June, 12.30 – 4.00pm at The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm
- Tuesday 24th June, 12.30 – 4.00pm at the Southbank Centre, near Waterloo
Each session will begin with a buffet lunch and conclude with a guided tour, where you can find out more about the opportunities the venue offers to young people. As well as providing a general update on HLF's programmes and funding priorities, each workshop will include a detailed look at the Young Roots programme, including a presentation from a Young Roots grantee, where they will share their experience of running an HLF-funded project. The workshop will also provide an opportunity to meet HLF’s regional development team.
Places are limited to 24 at each event, which will be offered on a first come first served basis. In the first instance, only one place will be offered per organisation; however, please note on your booking form if you would like a second place and we will do our best to accommodate you. The content of both workshops will be the same.
If you or a colleague would like to attend, please complete and return the attached booking form as soon as possible to: kelly.barber@cityoflondon.gov.uk
